I propose to take Questions Nos 257, 258 and 259 together.

The deployment of Garda manpower and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. I am informed by them that the number of gardaí in all ranks in the Galway West Division on 31 December 1994 was 319. The number on 30 September 1995 was 310.
The following table sets out details of the number of retirements and replacements in the Galway West Division since 1 January 1995.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the present deployment of the Force within the Galway West Division is, in their judgment, the best possible in terms of providing an appropriate level of Garda service to the area. I am further informed by them that the question of filling the remaining vacancies in the division will be fully considered in conjunction with the needs of other divisions throughout the country when additional manpower becomes available.
