Question:

277 Mr. D. McDowell asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of people, by gender, age group and marital status, claiming unemployment benefit or assistance who are working part-time. [16389/95]

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 276 and 277 together.

There are currently an estimated 35,000 casual and part-time workers in receipt of an unemployment payment. A separate count of these two groups is not maintained. The following table gives the estimated breakdown of this group by age, marital status and sex. This information has been compiled from a sample of unemployment payment recipients.

Details relating to the sector of the economy in which these workers are employed are not held by my Department.
