Question:

117 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Education the number of sixth class pupils leaving Saint Colmcille's Senior School, Knocklyon, Dublin 14, who were seeking a local second-level school but could not be accommodated; the names of the schools which have provided places for pupils of Saint Colmcille's; the number of places available; if she has satisfied herself that the large number of pupils leaving Saint Colmcille's can be accommodated in the immediate area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17195/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 115 and 117 together. The position regarding the provision of a post primary school in the Knocklyon area is as set out in my reply to Question No. 214 on 20 September last.

The site at Scholarstown Road remains in the ownership of the Department of Education. South Dublin County Council offered to maintain the site until it was required for building purposes if my Department allowed the local community to avail of it as an amenity area. The Department agreed to this on condition that vacant possession would be available to the Department when this was requested.

Some 194 pupils left sixth class in St. Colmcille's primary school at the end of June 1995. My Department is not aware of Knocklyon pupils who could not be accommodated in postprimary schools within a reasonable distance. The bulk of the primary school leavers enrolled in Sancta Maria Convent and Coláiste Éanna, Ballyroan, Our Lady's school, Templeogue, Templeogue College and Terenure College. Precise details of the number of places made available by the schools in question are not readily available.

I am satisfied that, with the provision of the additional accommodation proposed for Coláiste Éanna and Templeogue College, the Knocklyon primary school leavers can be accommodated both now and in the long-term. I will ensure, however, that the position is kept under regular review.
