Vol. 458 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Building Contracts.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

116 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Education the individual contracts under review for an extension to post-primary schools within a two mile radius of Saint Colmcille's national school. Knocklyon, Dublin 14, in the years 1994 and 1995; the individual contracts not approved; the values of the contracts; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17194/95]

In the context of my Department's post-primary building programme, a contract is a legally binding agreement between the Department and a building contractor to undertake construction work. Once signed, a contract may only be reviewed or amended strictly in accordance with the terms of the contract.

I understand that in this instance the Deputy is referring to accommodation being provided for students from Knocklyon in schools outside the immediate Knocklyon area. Additional accommodation is being provided at Coláiste Éanna, Ballyroan and Templeogue College, some of which is intended to cater for pupils from the Knocklyon area. Construction is at present under way on the first phase of an extension project at Coláiste Éanna which will cost approximately £465,000; the second phase is at an initial planning stage.

Architectural planning for an extension to Templeogue College is well advanced and the question of allowing the project to proceed to the construction stage will be considered in the context of the 1996 allocation for post-primary building purposes. Is is not the practice of my Department to provide detailed costings for projects in advance of inviting tenders.
