82 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number of illegal unlicensed radio stations in operation; the action, if any, he proposes in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17383/95]
It is difficult to be exact about the numbers of such stations in operation, since they are transient by nature, tend to move about on the frequency bands and often change their names. In the Dublin area I believe that there are about six such stations currently in operation. Some others operate only at weekends. There are, in addition, a number of other frequencies that are being misused, for example with continuous music being broadcast or perhaps a carrier-wave on the frequency. Although the problem is less pressing outside Dublin, problems also arise on occasion in other areas of the country.
As I have previously stated, my position regarding the operation of illegal pirate radio stations is that the full provisions of the Broadcasting and Wireless Telegraphy Acts will be invoked against such stations in any situation where the circumstances allow, and those involved in illegal broadcasting, including businesses and people advertising on, or providing services to, illegal stations, should have no doubt that action may be taken against them at any time. My Department will keep this matter under careful review and efforts will be intensified as the need is identified.
