Vol. 458 No. 6

Written Answers. - CIE's Financial Performance.

Noel Treacy

Question:

83 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications his views on the expected losses by CIE for 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16266/95]

It would not be appropriate for me to comment on specific aspects of CIE's financial performance for 1995 in advance of the publication of the group's annual report which is not due until 1996.

I am, however, aware of the generally difficult financial situation faced by the CIE Group. I have already indicated the need for a more commercially oriented and customer focused approach to the provision of public transport services by CIE.

The financial and other problems faced by CIE must be tackled as part of an overall and comprehensive strategy for the future development of the group. I have already outlined the main elements of this strategy in my statement to the Joint Committee on Commercial State-Sponsored Bodies, and most recently in my reply to private notice questions on 15 November 1995.
