Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Repairs Funding.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

126 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Education the circumstances in which money allocated for school repairs in a given year or years is not then spent on the schools. [17653/95]

As school maintenance is funded from the capitation grant and, therefore, a matter for individual schools, I take it the Deputy's question relates to capital improvement works which receive specific grant-aid from my Department.

Part of the capital allocation for school building purposes is made available each year, for urgent works, including refurbishments. These projects have a high priority and, as far as possible are undertaken during the year they are approved.

The factors which have the greatest influence on the timing of the execution of such works include planning, the availability of the local financial contribution, and whether the work needs to be carried out during school closure periods.

If the Deputy has a specific project in mind, perhaps she might give the details to my office and I will arrange to have the matter examined.
