Vol. 459 No. 3

Written Answers. - Chiropodists' Assessment and Advisory List.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

88 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health the conditions necessary for admission to the chiropodists' assessment and advisory list; if his attention has been drawn to the many excellent chiropodists with years of experience who are members of the Irish Chiropodist Organisation; the plans, if any, he has to provide for their admission to this assessment and advisory list; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18111/95]

, Limerick East): The conditions necessary for admission to the Chiropodists' Assessment and Advisory list are: (1) membership of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists of Ireland and eligibility for State Registration in the United Kingdom, (2) to have been in full-time practice in chiropody for not less than five years out of the previous seven years, prior to June 1963.

These groups are the only ones recognised for the provision of chiropody services in the public health service. This is on the basis that they have undertaken a three year full-time, comprehensive course of training or were established as practising chiropodists fulfilling the above criteria when the assessment committee was established in 1974.

My Department is currently examining the possibility of establishing a revised assessment mechanism for chiropodists, and I shall be in contact with each of the relevant organisations in due course.
