Vol. 459 No. 3

Written Answers. - Combating Discrimination.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

109 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if the Government is fully committed to combating all forms of discrimination, whether on grounds of colour, creed or for any other reason; if so, the procedures in place to deal with allegations of discrimination made against public servants; if such procedures allow for the suspension of public servants during investigations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18203/95]

I intend to bring forward two Bills on anti-discrimination legislation — the Employment Equality Bill, covering discrimination in the workplace, and the Equal Status Bill, dealing with discrimination in non-employment areas. The Bills will prohibit discrimination in their respective areas on a wide range of grounds, namely gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race, colour, nationality, national or ethnic origin and membership of the travelling community. The legislation will apply to both public and private sectors.

Allegations of serious misconduct such as the discrimination mentioned would be dealt with under the disciplinary procedures of the relevant public sector bodies and could lead in some cases to suspensions.
