Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Nuclear Plant Commissioning.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

163 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the action, if any, he proposes to take in view of the full commissioning of the THORP nuclear plant, Sellafield, England; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18957/95]

The ministerial committee on Sellafield and the Irish Sea is continuing to progress the commitments set out in the Government's Policy Agreement A Government of Renewal and has asked the Attorney General to re-examine the possibility of taking legal action in relation to the Sellafield/THORP plant. While the Government is committed to taking legal action against Sellafield if a case for it can be shown to exist, it would serve no useful purpose to initiate such action without a legal case based on sound scientific evidence.

In the meantime, the Government continues to take all practical steps available to it at appropriate international fora to highlight its concerns about Sellafield.
