Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Radon Level Grants.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

164 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will immediately bring forward a system of grants to assist householders who have high radon levels in their dwellings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18959/95]

As indicated in its recently published Annual Report, the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, has intensified its efforts to create an informed public recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to elevated concentrations of radon gas in buildings. The Institute is at present carrying out a national programme of surveys into the presence of radon gas in dwellings in Ireland. The survey, which commenced in 1992, has been completed in eleven counties and is in progress in a further six. The survey is scheduled for completion in 1998.

Remedial action to deal with unacceptable levels of radon in dwellings is essentially a matter for the householders and property owners concerned. However, I am at present examining possible ways of assisting householders in this regard.
