Vol. 461 No. 5

Written Answers. - Heritage and Cultural Objects Theft.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

79 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the action, if any, he intends to take to assist in preventing further thefts of heritage and cultural objects from private dwellings in this State in view of the reputed loss of over £5 million worth of such items in the last 12 months; whether he will co-operate with the new Fine Arts Protection Group being set up by the owners of these private dwellings; whether a list of the stolen items has been compiled; whether he has been in contact with his counterparts in the EU, particularly those in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, in order to liaise on these matters; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3134/96]

The investigation of the theft of heritage and cultural objects from private dwellings is a matter for the Garda Síochána. My Department will continue to co-operate with the Department of Justice and any international agencies so as to be of the maximum assistance in this area.
