Vol. 461 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prisoners' Recreational Facilities.

Ivor Callely

Question:

119 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the recreational facilities, if any, available to prisoners in all the detention centres under the aegis of her Department; the facilities for each centre; the special or additional arrangements, if any, regarding these facilities; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3320/96]

Each of the institutions under the aegis of my Department provides both outdoor and indoor recreational facilities for inmates. The outdoor facilities provide for exercise on a group and individual basis, in compounds where football, jogging and other such activities can take place. All institutions have a supervised gymnasium. Other facilities which are available in all institutions include television and video showings in a communal area. Indoor activities such as pool, table tennis and board games are available at set times. Limited library facilities are available in all prisons and newspapers and magazines are available on request.
