Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Entrance Examination.

David Andrews

Question:

42 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Justice the measures, if any, she intends to take to ensure that law graduates will not have to sit an entrance examination in order to secure a place in the professional training course of the Law Society of Ireland; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3811/96]

The Law Society informed me that it decided to allow existing law graduates, both from here and Queen's University, Belfast, who have qualified in the five years prior to the recent High Court decision in this matter to enter the Law Society's Law School with exemptions.

I have asked the Advisory Committee on Legal Education and Training (ACLET) to consider the implications of the recent Supreme Court decision in regard to entry to the Law Society's Law School by current and future law degree students and to make such recommendations as it sees fit in the matter. The ACLET is chaired by Mr. Justice Ronan Keane and includes representatives of the Universities, the Law Society, the King's Inns, the Higher Education Authority, IBEC, ICTU, the Union of Students of Ireland and my Department. Its functions include examining matters relating to professional legal education and making recommendations to the relevant bodies in this area.
