Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Vehicle Theft.

Matt Brennan

Question:

56 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to introduce measures to combat the theft of vehicles and the contents of vehicles; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3812/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that every effort is made to prevent such crime and, where they occur, to bring those responsible to justice. Particular attention is paid by gardaí to areas where there is a record of such crime and at locations such as car parks where there is an obvious risk of such criminal activity.

The Garda continually offer crime prevention advice to motorists and, in this regard, strongly advise them not to leave unattended property in vehicles. Opportunistic criminals who engage in this particular form of crime are quick to prey on the large number of motorists who continue to leave property visible in their cars.
