Vol. 462 No. 3

Written Answers. - Athy (Kildare) Job Losses.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

106 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the efforts, if any, that are being made to find a new employer to replace the 35 lost jobs which occured consequent upon the move of Sherwood Medical Limited from Athy, County Kildare, to Tullamore, County Offaly; and if he will intervene directly with the agencies under the aegis of his Department to ensure that Athy will regain sustainable replacement jobs. [4601/96]

I am informed by IDA Ireland that Sherwood Medical Limited has offered all 35 staff in Athy, County Kildare the option of transferring to Sherwood Medical in Tullamore, County Offaly. Approximately half of the staff have agreed to do this while the other half will take advantage of a severance package offered by the company.

I can asure the Deputy that as soon as all staff have vacated the premises, IDA Ireland will actively market the factory with a view to finding new overseas investment through its network of offices both at home and abroad.
