Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - North-South Electricity Interconnector.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

57 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the proposals, if any, he has under consideration for increasing the capacity of the North-South electricity interconnector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4983/96]

The North-South electricity interconnector has a capacity of 300 megawatts. There are no plans at present to increase this capacity.

The ESB and NIE are currently involved in joint feasibility studies examining the totality of interconnection between the two networks. These studies, for which EU funding has been applied, will examine the technical aspects of extending interconnection and the benefits associated therewith.
