Vol. 463 No. 7

Written Answers. - Jobs Advertisements.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

58 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform his views on whether jobs advertised in the national media which specify an upper age limit are discriminatory; the plans, if any, he has to prohibit such discrimination; and if he will prohibit this practice in the public service. [7269/96]

I hope to publish shortly an Employment Equality Bill that will prohibit discrimination in employment on a wide range of grounds. The Bill will prohibit, among other grounds, discrimination on the grounds of age in employment, subject to certain conditions, including discriminatory job advertisements.

This legislation will cover discrimination in employment in both the public and private sectors.
