Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Funding Framework for Secondary Schools.

Micheál Martin

Question:

135 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education when she intends to establish the representative steering group to draw up a recommended funding framework which would ensure equal treatment for different schools within the second-level section while taking account of the needs of these different schools in view of the statement in the White Paper in respect of this matter. [9537/96]

The White Paper on Education —Charting our Education Future— sets out future policy on the funding of second-level schools. Funding mechanisms will be developed to ensure that non-feepaying schools will be funded on an equitable and transparent basis. In this context, a steering group will be established to draw up a recommended funding framework so as to ensure equal treatment for different schools within the sector while taking account of the needs of these schools.

Proposals are currently being formulated in my Department for the establishment of this group and I expect to be in a position to make an announcement on the matter shortly.
