Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Community School Enrolment.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

148 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education the action, if any, she will take in respect of a pupil (details supplied) in County Dublin who is seeking enrolment at a community college in Dublin in view of her previous commitment in Parliamentary Question No. 65 of 9 November 1995 that all such pupils will be catered for within the area for the school year 1996-97. [9465/96]

I appreciate that some pupils have had a difficulty in securing a place for next September at the community college referred to by the Deputy. However, my Department's main responsibility is to ensure that schools in an area can, between them, cater for all pupils seeking second level places in the area. This may result, however, in some pupils not obtaining a place in the school of their first choice.

I understand that the pupil mentioned by the Deputy has secured a place in a local secondary school for next September.

I should also mention that an extension to the community college in question is at architectural planning stage.
