Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - Irish Rail Wheelchair Facilities.

Tony Gregory

Question:

235 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the plans, if any, he has to provide adequate facilities for wheelchair-bound passengers on Irish Rail's main line trains. [10934/96]

The provision of facilities for wheelchair-bound passengers and other people with disabilities on trains operated by Iarnród Éireann is a matter for the company itself. I am advised that it is Iarnród Éireann's policy to provide a dedicated space for mobility impaired people on all Intercity trains. To this end, alterations have been made to all of these trains to provide at least one space for wheelchair-bound customers, located in the dining car and marked by a sticker on the window of the carriage. Furthermore, all new Intercity rolling stock will have special facilities for the mobility impaired, including toilets suitable for use by people with disabilities, which will compare with the facilities currently available on cross-Border trains and on the railcars used on the Kildare line.
