Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - Air Crash Inquiry.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

39 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will raise the matter of the crash of the St. Phelim aeroplane in 1968 with his British counterpart in order to institute an independent inquiry into the cause of the crash in view of new evidence that has been uncovered. [7966/96]

The Deputy I am sure is aware that this accident was the subject of a detailed investigation by the inspector of accidents of my Department. The report of the investigation, which was issued in September 1970, stated that there was not enough evidence available on which to reach a conclusion of reasonable probability as to the initial cause of this tragic accident.

As has been previously pointed out in response to Dáil question on this accident, my Department has no new information which would indicate that the findings of the published report are open to question. Should the Deputy have any new evidence which could be of relevance to the findings of the published accident report he should forward it to my Department without delay.
