Written Answers. - Disabled Person's Grant.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

76 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Health the assistance, if any, available for disabled drivers towards the purchase of a car; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10982/96]

Limerick East): A motorised transport grant is payable by health boards for the conversion of an existing motor vehicle or towards the purchase of an adapted new car for use by a disabled person. The objective of the grant is to help a person with a disability seek and/or retain employment.

Accordingly, to be eligible for the grant an applicant must need a car in order to earn a living although a person who lives in a remote area may also qualify. Eligibility is subject to a means test and a medical test and the maximum grant payable at present is £2,639.
