Vol. 466 No. 8

Written Answers. - Semi-State Sector Appointments.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

117 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to recent appointments in the semi-State sector; whether he is investigating these appointments; the conflicts of interests, if any, that have arisen in recent appointments in the semi-State sector; whether a code of practice applies in the semi-State sector in relation to the appointments of relatives and acquaintances; the breaches of this code, if any, that have been brought to his attention; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12446/96]

As indicated in my reply to a question put down by the Deputy on 28 May 1996 I have no function in relation to the creation or filling of any positions in State bodies under the aegis of my Department apart from making appointments to the boards of these bodies. I am not aware of any reason I should investigate any such appointments, or of conflicts of interests arising. The other issues referred to by the Deputy are operational matters for the State bodies, in which I have no function.
