Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Youth Diversion Projects.

Patrick J. Morley

Question:

85 Mr. Morley asked the Minister for Justice whether she intends to increase the number of youth diversion projects; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12907/96]

The youth diversion projects funded by my Department are targeted at specific large high density urban areas where there is a combination of a large young population, high unemployment and a lack of basic amenities. The projects have a particular focus and are directed at young people who are either involved in or most at risk of becoming involved in crime. Proposals for such projects are, therefore, carefully evaluated in order to ensure they meet the primary focus of such schemes.

The need to increase the number of such projects is a matter which is reviewed on an ongoing basis having regard to available funding. I have already this year approved two additional projects and hope to launch a further two later in the year.
