Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Application for Refugee Status.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

274 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Justice when a decision will be made on an application for refugee status by a person (details supplied) who has lived in Ireland since 4 January 1991, and who, with her family was attacked by armed Serbs who sought to kill her and seriously injured her mother with a hand grenade, whose home town is still occupied by Serbs and whose application for refugee status was made on 28 June 1995. [14280/96]

It is not the practice to comment publicly on individual applicants for refugee status having regard to the fact that applications by their nature are made in confidence with an expectation by applicants that such confidence will be preserved.

However, the person to whom the Deputy refers entered the State on 4 January 1994 and applied for political asylum on 15 March 1995.

The application in question is under consideration at present. It is not possible to say when this case will be decided having regard to the number of applications on hand.
