Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Murder Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

292 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of murders there have been in Ireland since August 1994; the number of these that are understood to be contract killings; and the cases that have been satisfactorily resolved. [14389/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of murders recorded by the Garda for the period 1 January 1995 to 31 December 1995 is 44. The number from 1 January 1996 to 27 June 1996 is 25. Detections have been made in 51 of these cases. The number of murders for the period 1 August 1994 to 31 December 1994 are not readily available. No information is available as to the number which were the subject of so-called "contract killings".
