Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pollution Abatement Scheme.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

96 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment whether resources will be forthcoming to undertake the Upper Bohernabreena pollution abatement scheme, County Dublin in view of the recent pollution on the River Dodder and the subsequent fish kill. [14786/96]

Under my Department's 1996 small water and sewerage schemes programme, county councils were each invited to submit two suitable small water supply or sewerage scheme proposals. South Dublin County Council submitted two sewerage projects, Esker Lodge sewerage scheme and Watery Lane sewerage scheme. Such schemes are approved in two tranches each year: the Esker Lodge scheme was approved earlier this year and the Watery Lane scheme will be considered for approval later in the year.

The council also included the Bohernabreena scheme as part of the 1996 application. My Department advised the council that since two suitable sewerage schemes had already been prioritised and because the Bohernabreena scheme did not meet the eligibility criteria under the programme, the scheme could not be considered for grant approval.
