Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Dublin Project.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

133 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Education when she proposes to respond fully to a letter sent to her on 24 June 1996, regarding a project (details supplied) in County Dublin; her views on whether two identical acknowledgments are acceptable after three months; the current position in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17335/96]

The details supplied by the Deputy are not sufficient to be able to trace the correspondence in question. If the Deputy wishes to supply additional information I will have further inquiries made.

In relation to the subject matter of the correspondence, a site at the location referred to by the Deputy was purchased by the Department in 1982 for the purpose of providing a post-primary school.

Following an extremely thorough examination of all relevant factors by an independent consultant, it has been established that a post-primary school is not now required in the area. It was decided instead that the demand for school places could best be met by providing additional accommodation at existing schools.

In a recent development, temporary recognition has been granted to a primary gaelscoil to serve the area. Until such time as the development potential and associated site requirements of the gaelscoil have been established, the site referred to by the Deputy will remain in the ownership of the Department.
