Vol. 469 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Donegal Post Offices.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

164 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the steps, if any, currently being taken to ensure that rural post offices in County Donegal are safeguarded from threatened closure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18194/96]

The question of post office closures is a day-to-day matter for An Post in which I have no function. I am not aware of any general threat of closure of post offices in County Donegal or elsewhere.

I have informed the House in the past at Question Time that the proposal to close 550 post offices contained in the 1991 viability plan was withdrawn. The relatively small number of closures which have taken place since then have been decided on a case by case basis by An Post after careful examination. Such closures do not require my approval.
