Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Deregulation of Public Services.

Ray Burke

Question:

298 Mr. R. Burke asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the Government's position on the deregulation of public services proposed by the EU. [18585/96]

The introduction and processing of measures, involving liberalisation in the public services and utilities, under the agegis of my Department, has been ongoing for a number of years in the European Union. Ireland supports, in principle, EU proposals in regard to liberalisation, so long as provision is made for an orderly transition to a competitive regime and that account is taken, as appropriate, of particular circumstances prevailing in Ireland in the transport, energy and communications sectors. Ireland participates fully in negotiations leading to the adoption of relevant EU legislation.
