Vol. 470 No. 4

Written Answers. - Lucan (Dublin) Sports and Leisure Centre.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

203 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education if she issued a grant (details supplied) to Lucan Sports and Leisure Centre, County Dublin in 1995 in view of the complaints from some members that the grant was not utilised for the purposes specified in the approval issued from her Department. [19370/96]

In March, 1994, the Lucan Sports and Leisure Centre applied for a grant of £37,000 under my Department's recreational facilities scheme for the installation of a floor and heating system in the complex, which was estimated to cost £53,000. In view of the very large number of applications received under this scheme and the relatively limited funds available it was only possible to provide a grant of £10,000.

As the grant was insufficient to undertake the proposed works it was agreed that the grant would be paid in respect of equipment which the complex also required. All the conditions of the scheme for the payment of the grant were met and to date a total of £9,209 has been paid on the basis of invoices received.
