Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Teilifís na Gaeilge.

Mary Harney

Question:

26 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the discussions, if any, he has had with the authorities in Northern Ireland regarding the possibility of broadcasting Teilifís na Gaeilge in Northern Ireland; and, if so, the outcome of such discussions. [20883/96]

As I indicated in my reply of 8 October to a supplementary question from Deputy Sargent, columns 1472 and 1473 of the Official Report for that day refer, this matter is being dealt with under the Anglo-Irish Conference where efforts are concentrated on increasing the power northwards from the RTÉ transmitter at Clermont Carn, County Louth to make RTÉ services, including Teilifís na Gaeilge, more widely available in Northern Ireland.

As I indicated in my earlier reply I have written to the Secretary of State for National Heritage, who has functional responsibility for broadcasting matters in the UK, seeking political agreement to proposals to improve reception of RTÉ in Northern Ireland, on a phased basis. I am still awaiting a substantive reply to this letter.
