Vol. 472 No. 7

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Noel Treacy

Question:

98 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education if she will immediately direct the commencement of a project (details supplied) in County Galway; the reason for the delay in the commencement of this project; the date on which construction of this project will commence; the amount of money allocated in this respect; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24043/96]

I included the project in the 1995 capital programme to allow it to proceed through the various planning stages. The contract documentation is now ready. The timing of the tender and contract processes must be considered in the light of existing contractual commitments for 1997, and the funding to be made available next year. These issues are under examination at present and my Department will be in touch with the school management when a decision is made. I am anxious to see the project commence as quickly as possible.

Michael Ring

Question:

99 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education the funding, if any, which has been given for repairs to a school (details supplied) in County Mayo. [24044/96]

My Department sanctioned a grant of £49,875 in May 1996 towards a building project at this school. The project has been planned by the Department's professional advisers and planning permission has been obtained recently. It is expected that construction will commence early in 1997.

Chris Flood

Question:

100 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Education if she has received an application from the boards of management of schools (details supplied) in Dublin 24 for funding towards the carrying out of essential repairs in the schools in question; if so, the specific works for which funding has been requested; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24045/96]

I have received an application in respect of the schools referred to by the Deputy. The works concerned are repairs to the windows, roofs, doors, floor covering, resurfing of tarmacadam, replacement of two boilers and consequential redecoration in the schools referred to by the Deputy. These works are nearing completion.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

101 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the serious condition of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 14, where some windows are ready to fall out and are unsuitable for keeping out rain; her views on the fact that water lodging on the roof has caused the ceiling to collapse in places and that the building cannot be adequately heated due to the number of gaps and draughts from the windows; the reason the school in question has been requested to submit a full health and safety proposal when the urgent nature of the works is evident from the consultant architect's report and a casual observation; if she will agree to provide urgent assistance to allow the school to function pending a decision on other accommodation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24046/96]

My Department's post primary building unit has examined the consultant architect's report in respect of the school in question and the school has been visited by a member of my Department's technical staff. This report does not give any indication that the windows in question are in danger of falling out. It appears that the architect's concerns mainly realate to the suitability of the windows.

In order for my Department's technical staff to make a more informed decision on the matter, the school was requested to submit a report which would detail the extent of the works proposed and the cost implications of these works. As soon as this information is submitted to my Department, a decision will be made and the school authorities will be informed accordingly.
