Vol. 473 No. 3

Written Answers. - Attacks on Sheep.

Joe Walsh

Question:

225 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the disquiet among sheep farmers due to the killing of sheep by uncontrolled dogs; the steps, if any, he proposes to take to highlight to gravity of this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24904/96]

I am aware of the continuing problem occasioned by attacks on farm livestock, particularly sheep, by marauding dogs. These dogs are a particular menace at lambing time. In addition to the cruelty and distress suffered by livestock, the financial losses to farmers, and indeed the economy, can be considerable but can be prevented by responsible dog ownership.

I would appeal to all dog owners to ensure that their dogs are kept under control at all times. Negligent dog owners can face stiff penalties under the law and can be held liable for damages and costs in a civil action. In addition, dogs may be shot by the owner of the animals subjected to attack.
