Question:411 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prison places available in 1996; and the total number of prison places occupied by debtors in 1996. [1034/97]

There was a daily average 2,215 prison places available during 1996. The total number of persons committed for non-payment of debt during the year is not yet readily available. However, I can inform the Deputy that persons in this category comprise less than 0.5 per cent of the total prison population on any one day.
