Vol. 473 No. 5

Written Answers. - Domestic Violence.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

141 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice the number of convictions secured to date under the Domestic Violence Act, 1996; the average sentence in this regard; the proposals, if any, she has for the establishment of a register of sex offenders; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1815/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information requested is not available in the format sought by the Deputy and could not be compiled without a disproportionate expenditure of Garda time and resources. Such information as can be readily compiled will be supplied to the Deputy as soon as possible. Crime statistics relating to domestic violence are available in the annual reports of An Garda Síochána which are laid in the Oireachtas Library each year.

The issue of a paedophile register will be addressed in my Department's forthcoming Discussion Paper on Sexual Offences.
