Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Monument Designation.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

141 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will designate the Doon Fort at Portnoo, County Donegal, as a national monument; if work will be carried out on the archaeological site; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2094/97]

Doon Fort is a national monument and is accordingly afforded the protection of the National Monuments Acts. It is not, however, in State care and, consequently, responsibility for carry out works at the Fort is not a matter for the national monuments and historic properties service of my Department.

The national monuments and historic properties service is presently considering the possibility of acquiring the Fort.
