Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Costs.

Ivor Callely

Question:

279 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the total legal costs incurred by his Department in 1995 for professional legal services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2867/97]

The amount of legal costs paid by the Department of Defence in 1995 was £1,340,505. This sum represents the legal expenses of persons, including members and former members of the Defence Forces, who claimed damages or compensation from the Department and who were either awarded costs by the courts or whose costs were paid by the Department as part of out-of-court settlements. The State's legal costs are normally paid from the Vote for the Office of the Attorney General.
