Vol. 475 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Museum.

Ivor Callely

Question:

40 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the opening hours and days of the National Museum; his views on whether an extension of the opening hours during the summer tourist season has merit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4620/97]

The Deputy will already be aware that the National Museum is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, inclusive, and on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum is closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day.

The opening hours were originally set having particular regard to the needs of tourists, schoolchildren as well as the general visitor and it is considered that they have been successful in meeting these requirements.

I am not aware of any major demand from the public for a change in these hours. As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 11 on 19 December last, vol. 473, col. 713, of the Official Report, I have at present no plans to alter these opening hours.
