Vol. 475 No. 4

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

159 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for the Environment when he will be in a position to meet a deputation from IBEC north west region to discuss the mid-term review of funding for national roads in the north west; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5056/97]

In November 1996, I received representations on behalf of the north west regional office of IBEC in relation to road funding in the area. I have issued a comprehensive reply outlining the significant level of funding provided for road developments of benefit to the north west.

The mid-term review of the Operational Programme for Transport 1994-99 is currently under way. In accordance with EU regulations governing the Structural Funds, this review is being undertaken by the monitoring committee for the operational programme to whom any proposals or submissions should be addressed. The monitoring committee is composed of representatives of the European Union, Government Departments, implementation agencies and the social partners, including a representative of IBEC. As I have no direct role in the conduct of the mid-term review, I do not propose to meet deputations in relation to the matter.
