Vol. 476 No. 6

Written Answers. - Postal Voting Facilities.

Mary Harney

Question:

96 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment if he will grant postal votes to presiding officers and polling clerks who otherwise will be unable to exercise their voting rights in the forthcoming general election; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7849/97]

There are no proposals to provide postal voting facilities for election staff. Section 99 of the Electoral Act, 1992, provides that where a Dáil elector for a constituency is employed by a returning officer for any purpose in connection with a Dáil election and the circumstances of the elector's employment are, in the opinion of the returning officer, such as to prevent the elector would at the polling station at which the elector would otherwise be entitled to vote, the returning officer may authorise the elector to vote at another more convenient polling station within the constituency.
