Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Garda CCTV Systems.

Chris Flood

Question:

234 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Justice if the advisory committee within the Garda Síochána established to examine all applications and proposals for CCTV systems as an aid to policing, has determined a priority listing for those applications on hand; if so, if she will give details of the priority listing; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9073/97]

The advisory committee recently established by the Garda Commissioner, comprising higher officers in the Garda Síochána and an official from my Department, have commenced their examination of all applications and proposals for CCTV systems as an aid to policing with a view to determining a priority listing of locations for the installation of such systems.

I expect the Garda Commissioner to forward his recommendations in the matter to me in the near future. However, I should point out that the extension of Garda CCTV systems to other areas will have implications for Garda personnel and resources and must, of course, be viewed in the context of overall policing operations. These CCTV systems must be carefully planned and integrated into Garda operational procedures. These will be among the factors which the advisory committee will take into consideration.
