66 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Taoiseach the value and volume of food imported into Ireland for the year ending 31 December 1996 under the main product categories. [9891/97]

The most recent month for which the information is available is October 1996. I will, therefore, give statistics for the ten months period January-October 1996.

The total value of food imports in the period was £974.8 million, while the total volume was 1,749.3 thousand tonnes.

Overall, approximately 7 per cent of trade is unclassified by commodity. The unclassified trade includes low value transactions, parcel post, Shannon Free Airport trade and some intra-EU estimates.
