Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Building Project.

Albert Reynolds

Question:

170 Mr. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education if she will immediately allocate sufficient funding for the repairs and extension at St. Teresa's national school, Clontrumper, Ballinalee, County Longford, to replace a prefabricated classroom which has been in use for almost 20 years and is now unsafe and unsuitable, in view of the fact that the office of the principal has to be used to accommodate a remedial teacher and her class and an immediate allocation is required to meet the current health and safety standards. [10666/97]

The school referred to by the Deputy has applied to my Department for grant aid towards the cost of refurbishment works and the provision of additional permanent accommodation.

Officials from my Department's building unit met with representatives of the school management recently and agreed to provide grant aid towards the cost of a replacement prefabricated classroom.

The school indicated that they only wished to proceed with the provision of a permanent extension. The school was advised that it could use the grant for the prefabricated classroom towards the cost of providing a permanent extension. The school agreed to consider this option and my Department is currently awaiting their response.
