Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Artificial Limbs.

Pat Gallagher

Question:

78 Mr. Gallagher (Laoighis-Offaly) asked the Minister for Health if he will sanction an application, which was referred to his Department some months ago, to the Midland Health Board by a person (details supplied) in County Offaly for assistance towards the cost of an artificial limb under the scheme of refunds for drugs and appliances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10638/97]

Limerick East): My Department has replied to the Midland Health Board indicating that artificial limbs are not covered under the drugs refund scheme but, where required, are supplied free of charge to medical card holders. Under the Health Act, 1970, medical cards are issued to persons who, in the opinion of the chief executive officer of the appropriate health board, are unable, without undue hardship, to provide general practitioner, medical and surgical services for themselves and their dependants. Accordingly, I have referred the Deputy's question to the chief executive officer, Midland Health Board, requesting that he examine this matter and reply directly to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.
