Vol. 478 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sea Angling Development.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

266 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for the Marine if he will respond to the proposals by the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers in relation to the further development of the sport in Ireland; and if he will consider the extension of zones and their definition and the benefits which could accrue from the federation's proposals. [11331/97]

The proposals for the further development of sea angling in Ireland prepared by the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers are a comprehensive and wide-ranging set of measures intended to protect and develop sea angling in Ireland.

The management and conservation of fish stocks and in particular sea angling target species, will require in-depth analysis and any changes, because of the implications for communities dependent on sea fishing, will need to be implemented with the co-operation and goodwill of all interested sectors.

I have asked the Marine Institute to co-ordinate the necessary research into the state of these stocks so that appropriate conservation measures can be bought forward.
