Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cork Public Lighting.

Bernard Allen

Question:

171 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received a request from Cork Corporation to provide funding to upgrade the public lighting on the north ring road in Cork between Blackpool and Parkcourt. [16212/97]

Cork Corporation requested, in its roadworks programme for 1997, a contribution from my Department towards the cost of upgrading public lighting on non-national roads in the city. However, the position is that the maintenance and upgrading of lighting on non-national roads falls to be funded by the corporation from its own resources supplemented by discretionary block grants from my Department. The discretionary block grant allocation to Cork Corporation in 1997 was £1.088 million, an increase of almost 9 per cent on the 1996 payment figure.
