Michael Ring

Question:

205 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on whether it is possible to replace the reflective sidemarkings and backmarkings on trucks with lights, similar to those in other EU countries. [16884/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 204 and 205 together.

Reflective side markings and rear markings on certain goods vehicles, goods trailers and tractors are required under Irish road traffic regulations as a positive aid to road safety. In addition, all mechanically propelled vehicles, other than cycles and invalid carriages, are required to be fitted with side and rear lamps at all times. Where appropriate they are also required to be fitted with rear and lateral projecting load lamps and marker lamps, designed to outline the vehicle and any trailer or trailers and any projecting loads.

There is no EU requirement at present for side marking lamps to be fitted to vehicles. The European Commission is expected within the next year to complete proposals for whole vehicle type approval for goods vehicles and trailers. The question of EU wide requirements for reflective side markings and side marking lamps will be considered in that context.
