Vol. 482 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tour de France Competition.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

59 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the discussions, if any, he has had since taking office on the hosting of the 1998 Tour de France; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17296/97]

The arrangements for the start of next year's Tour de France in Ireland are being co-ordinated locally by L'Evenement Limited, with whose directors, in particular Mr. Pat McQuaid, I am in regular contact. I have also had the opportunity to meet with senior representatives of the Société du Tour de France, when I attended the finish of the 1997 tour in Paris last July.

Tomorrow, I will again be in Paris, this time as guest of honour at the official launch of the route of the 1998 tour, including the Irish opening stages. As part of the programme, I will be presenting a five minute video, especially produced for this event, which features some wonderful Tourism Brand Ireland footage as well as coverage from previous international cycling events which have taken place in Ireland. This video will be seen by over 1,000 guests, including 800 international media, sponsors, cyclists and numerous dignitaries and will comprise an important component of Bord Fáilte's promotional activities around the tour.
